Roma Community - Safeguarding and Social Care

Some Roma people will mistrust social care professionals because of experiences in their countries of origin and/or stories in the media. They may fear having their children removed, so can appear ‘hard to reach’, withdrawn and difficult to support. So it is important for social care professionals to understand Roma culture  and to work with families to build trust. This is achieved primarily through the use of professional, unbiased interpreters meeting with Roma parents where they feel comfortable, and communicating clearly using videos and graphics rather than written instructions.

Changing working practices and approaches can be demanding, but can be achieved through multi-agency working to join up services for Roma people and to develop trusting relationships  and understanding within the community.
