Training in Equity

Fatimah Mohamied

Fatimah Mohamied is a Midwife, Muslim and Mother who is an alloy of British, Egyptian and Bengali constituents. For the past 10 years she has been on a Journey to better understand her position in the world as a British woman of colour, and has come from that journey understanding the importance of acknowledging how we all harm one another, especially when we remain unaware of the power we each have.

Fatimah Mohamied has extensive experience providing Cultural Competency training for healthcare staff, especially in maternity where tragic racial inequalities have been evidenced. The training encompasses a discourse on unconscious bias, allyship and the social interplay between Race, poverty and politics.

Fatimah’s training aims to inspire thought by encouraging the audience to feel safe to share perspectives, thoughts and the courage to be vulnerable enough to possibly get it wrong and not feel vilified for doing so. Her training aims not to revolutionise individuals’ beliefs, principles or politics, but to inspire a change in hearts and minds in the everyday decisions they make and preconceptions they have about people who are different to them, by making them aware of the power they have to inspire change themselves.

Moreover, the training’s main ethos is to influence the kernel of understanding we each have, to grow into the seedling needed for ongoing personal growth, to help attendees inspire others to inspire others.

Professional Experience, Highlights and Distinctions:

  • As a member of the Critical Midwifery Studies Collective, Fatimah has also contributed to talks on the politics of childbirth at the Humanising Birth Conference.
  • She has also advocated for student midwives at various other conferences, and has had her writing published on many platforms, such as Nursing Narratives, Khidr Collective and the Maternity and Midwife Forum.
  • She has videos from the latter organisation available on youtube to watch where she discusses cultural sensitivity for Muslim families undergoing birth.
  • Fatimah is also the facilitator of the Cultural Safety Book club where attendees undergo a collective personal journey through analysing texts weekly and sharing insights and analysis.

10.8 Fatimah Mohamied – Spiritual meanings in childbirth: the role of the midwife #MidwiferyHour

Historically, in all cultures, midwives have had a close connection with spirituality, and with religion. So as we look at contemporary care, do we need to reflect and be aware of our historical links? An awareness of different cultures, and of differences between beliefs, and practices is fundamental to the way the midwife can personalise care …
