Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
EDI stands for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion. It refers to the policies, practices, and attitudes that promote fair treatment, respect for differences, and equal opportunities for all individuals, regardless of their background or identity.
Organisations need to know and understand protected characteristics and the Equality Act 2010 because these provide a legal framework to prevent discrimination and promote equality. The Equality Act 2010 identifies specific protected characteristics—such as age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, marriage and civil partnership, and pregnancy and maternity—that are legally protected from unfair treatment. Understanding these helps organisations ensure they do not discriminate, whether intentionally or unintentionally, in their policies, recruitment, service delivery, or workplace practices.
By being aware of and complying with the Equality Act 2010, organisations create safer, more inclusive environments where everyone has equal access to opportunities and services. This not only fulfills legal obligations but also improves organisational culture, reputation, and effectiveness by valuing and leveraging diversity.
