Roma Community - Engagement

Engagement

Roma people have experienced, and continue to experience, discrimination and persecution. In many countries they remain marginalised, experiencing barriers to employment, education, health and social care. Roma people come to the UK for a fresh start for themselves and their families, and to escape persecution in Eastern Europe. And whilst they may initially mistrust authority figures, this can be overcome by consistent, sustained community outreach work and trust and confidence building. There are several successful Roma outreach initiatives both within the East of England and further afield which are seeing extremely positive results – particularly where they are run by Roma people themselves. Engaging effectively and sustainably with Roma communities requires a multi-agency support strategy so that Roma people understand how to integrate into UK society and feel safe and respected. This will take time, communication and flexibility to be successful, but it can be achieved.
