Spotlight on Peter Wortley, Leadership, Coaching and Resilience Specialist

Published on 6 April 2020

“I like making a sustainable difference to the way people think, behave and perform and the effect that this has on teams and organisations.”

Peter Wortley is an experienced interim manager and coach with a track record of successfully transforming teams and organisations through leadership and coaching. Peter has been researching Mental Toughness for the past 15 years, an aspect of psychology which is a combination of resilience and confidence. This research has lead to Peter undertaking a PhD in the area of Mental Toughness Development. Research shows a strong positive correlation between Mental Toughness and individual performance, positive attitudes to change and a negative correlation with individual stress under pressure.

Recently, Peter has been working with a large private sector organisation prior to them commencing a major organisational transformation project. The aim was to enable the leadership and management, through a programme which combines action learning workshops and individual coaching, to coach their team members and develop the mental toughness of the individuals and the teams. The organisation has since seen changes in both the pace of change and in the manner in which it is delivered. Instead of change being driven downwards through the organisation it is starting to be driven upwards – instead of resisting new ideas, team members are starting to become the instigators of change.

In addition, Peter has been providing executive coaching to several senior members of the leadership team of a large industry training board undergoing major organisational transformation. Through a combination of his coaching skills and knowledge and experience of his time leading major organisational transformations, Peter is able to challenge, support and enable the individuals he coaches to perform to the best of their ability, even under the intense pressure they face.
