Press release: Prime Minister approves East of England transport upgrades

Published on 4 October 2023

Following today’s announcements from the Prime Minister, EELGA is pleased that several transport projects, including the Ely and Haughley rail Junction upgrades and the A10 between Ely and Cambridge, have received approval to move forward as part of the Government’s announcement, which can be found on gov.uk.

Cllr Matthew Hicks, Chair of the East of England Local Government Association said: “Regarding the Ely and Haughley junctions in particular, EELGA has been working closely with colleagues throughout the region, including the Subnational Transport Bodies and the East of England All Party Parliamentary Group, to promote this project. The benefits are set to far outweigh its costs, and it is predicted that this development will not only level up the East of England but will serve to improve access to the international gateways in the East of England, boosting growth in all other regions of the UK as well.”

EELGA’s joint report with the East of England All Party Parliamentary Group – Levelling Up the East of England – highlights the importance of the Ely and Haughley junction upgrades in ensuring that the East of England meets the Government’s levelling up missions, particularly around public transport connectivity. Likewise, the Subnational Transport Bodies published “Keeping Trade on Track” in the spring of this year, outlining the overwhelming national support for the project, and highlighting the economic benefits of the Ely and Haughley junction upgrades.

We await further detail on this announcement, and look forward to constructive discussions with the Department of Transport and others to facilitate the next steps.”
