This course is the perfect starting point for anyone new to working with Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children (UASC). It provides a clear, accessible introduction to the asylum system and equips practitioners with the knowledge, skills and tools they need to support young people safely and confidently.
Through a trauma-informed, child-centred approach, this training helps practitioners understand the realities young people face before, during and after migration, and how these experiences shape their needs, rights and entitlements on arrival in the UK.
Delivered online, the course is suitable for social workers, personal advisers, accommodation staff, foster carers, and anyone involved in supporting separated migrant children in the East of England.
Learning objectives:
- Develop your understanding of the circumstances young people face before and during migration, and how these experiences shape their needs
- Understand the differences between planned and spontaneous arrivals – and the impact this has on a young person’s asylum claim
- Recognise the immediate needs of spontaneous arrivals and how to meet them safely and effectively
- Identify risk indicators of Modern Slavery and trafficking and know how to respond
- Understand how the asylum system works and build your skills to support young people throughout the process
- Understand the different asylum outcomes and what each outcome means for a young person’s future
- Be introduced to the practice of Triple Planning and how it supports safe, forward-looking decision-making.
- Apply a trauma-informed approach to your work with separated migrant children
