Local Government East has welcomed £20 million for Peterborough Sports Quarter, the freeze on rail fares, and acknowledges confirmation of funding for the Lower Thames Crossing, but warns that historic underfunding continues to constrain the region’s potential.
The East of England is home to the UK’s fastest-growing population, one of the highest employment rates (78.6%), and a local economy that has grown 57% since 1992. Yet it receives the lowest government funding per head in England. A recent report, Opportunity East: One Year On, shows that if funded at the same level as other regions, the East would gain an extra £10 billion annually – investment that could transform infrastructure, housing, and skills.

Cllr Graham Butland, Chair of Local Government East, said:
“Today’s Budget brings investment into the east- the sports quarter in Peterborough, rail fare freezes, and a commitment to the Lower Thames Crossing.. Our members will welcome the announcement on SEND. This shows that Central Government is listening to local government, and we look forward to hearing more about how existing deficits will be addressed in the settlement.”
“If Government is serious about building a fairer, stronger Britain, as a powerhouse of innovation and trade, the East of England needs more; poor transport links, skills shortages, and housing challenges hold us back. We will continue to review today’s statements over the coming days.”
What’s at Risk Without Action
Without urgent investment, major projects such as East West Rail and thousands of new homes could face delays. Water scarcity and poor connectivity threaten long-term growth, while skills shortages risk undermining world-leading sectors in life sciences, clean energy, and logistics.
Call to Action
Local Government East will continue to press for greater infrastructure funding, improved digital connectivity, and investment in skills. With the right support, the East can deliver on its promise and turbocharge national prosperity. We urge Government and partners to work with us to ensure this region gets its fair share.
